MUNICH - Canada defeated Russia 3-1 Sunday night to close out its round-robin schedule at the world hockey championship with a perfect 5-0 record.

The Canadians will play Finland on Wednesday in their first of three possible playoff games as they seek Canada's first world hockey title since 1961.

"We're all pretty excited," said goaltender Ron Tugnutt, who was strong in stopping 25 Russian shots in his first start of the tournament.

"Coming over here I was figuring maybe I'd get (to start against) Austria or Switzerland or Italy. Everybody gets pumped up for the Russians and I'm no exception."

Canada had already locked up first place in its pool, but the Russian rivalry ensured a spirited game. The Canadians seemed more intent on pummelling their opposition than finding the net.

Eric Lindros had one goal and an assist to increase his tournament-leading totals to 10 goals and six assists, while linemate Paul Kariya also contributed a goal and a helper to get be named the Canadian team's game star.

Lindros, Kariya and Shayne Corson - the third player on their line - now hold the top three spots in the tournament scoring chart.

Their totals were padded by double-digit routs last week against Austria and Italy, but Sunday night was a different story. The Russians finished third behind Canada and Sweden with a 2-2-1 record in their pool, but played an inspired game against Canada.

"We needed this type of game," said Corson.

"The last couple were easy blowouts so we needed something like this to tune us up for the playoffs."

Kevin Dineen and Kariya helped the Canadians take a 2-0 lead after the first period, despite being outshot 12-5.

In action Sunday afternoon, the Czechs defeated Finland 3-1, locking up first place for the Czech Republic in the B Pool and relegating Finland to fourth place.

Switzerland recorded its first world hockey championship win over Sweden in 43 years with a 6-4 upset, and Germany dumped the United States 6-3.
