Ottawa Senators hope to sign Yashin at world championships

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators hope to return from the world hockey championships in Germany with a signed contract for first-round draft pick Alexei Yashin, says his agent Alexander Berkovitch.

Berkovitch said Wednesday the club already has come to terms with defenceman Dimitri Filimonov, a Dynamo Moscow teammate of Yashin's, acquired from the Winnipeg Jets for a fourth-round pick in June's NHL entry draft.

The Senators new general manager, Randy Sexton, player personnel director John Ferguson and head coach Rick Bowness are scheduled to fly from Toronto to the world championships in Munich Friday.

"I think one of the main reasons they're going there is to talk to Alexei and (agent) Mark (Gandler) and put this deal to bed," said Berkovitch, whose agency also represents Filimonov.

Yashin, 19, a 6-3, 215-pound centre who scored nine goals and 14 assists in 31 games for Dynamo Moscow this season, currently is competing for the Russian national team in Munich. Filimonov, 21, a 6-4, 215-pound defenceman, is not.

"Dimitri agreed to terms right before the (March 22) trading deadline, it's just the physical signing of his name," Berkovitch said. "With Alexei, it's an offer outstanding which is being discussed right now.

The Senators' offer to Yashin has been reported as $2.2 million over five years. It is believed a house for Yashin and his parents, Valeri and Tatiana who are heavily involved in the negotiations, also is involved in the deal.

Sexton was more cautious about the complex contract offer Wednesday.

"We expect to see Alexei over there," he said. "There is still lots of work to do. It's not a done deal by any stretch. There are still a couple of little issues and a couple of big ones. I won't know until I speak to him."

Sexton said Yashin's release from Dynamo Moscow hasn't been completed.

"I would expect that we'll sit down with (Dynamo president) Alexander Steblin and probably Mark Gandler to try to put this thing to bed."
